What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
• Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art focused on controlling and submitting an opponent using leverage, technique, and timing. Developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family in Brazil, it evolved from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.• What makes BJJ unique is its ability to allow smaller or physically weaker individuals to defend themselves effectively against larger opponents. Through the use of positions like the guard, mount, and back control, along with joint locks and chokes, practitioners can neutralize threats without relying on strikes. This makes BJJ highly effective for self-defense and a key discipline in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).• Today, BJJ is a global sport, practiced with and without the gi, and structured with a formal belt ranking system. It remains a foundation of modern MMA and continues to grow worldwide as both a practical self-defense system and an exciting sport for people of all ages.
